MP Todd Doherty Updates CRD Board
Todd Doherty, Member of Parliament for Cariboo-Prince George, visited the Cariboo Regional District (CRD) Board of Directors. Doherty is Official Opposition Critic for Fisheries, Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard and he is the Co-Chair for the National Softwood Lumber Task Force.
Doherty updated the Board on his recent work and projects, including his Private Member’s Bill (C-211) regarding a national framework on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The CRD Directors were able to discuss a number of issues with MP Doherty including rural policing, sexual violence and sanctuary cities.
Funding Requested for Bouchie Lake Hall Upgrades
The Regional District is submitting an application to the Northern Development Initiative Trust requesting $29,500 in grant funding for improvements and upgrades at the Bouchie Lake Hall and grounds. Specifically, the funding will be used to replace the rooftop air unit on the Bouchie Lake Hall, replace the equestrian concession structure and replace the dashboards on the outdoor arena.
The Board also endorsed two other grant applications being submitted to the Northern Development Initiative Trust. Before applicants can submit a funding request, NDIT requires a resolution of support from the local government with jurisdiction in the project.
The Alexis Creek Indian Band is asking NDIT for $2,500 to support and enhance the 2017 Chilcotin Series Redstone Rodeo through upgrades and repairs at the rodeo grounds. Additionally, Xat’sull First Nation is applying for $250,000 in funding from NDIT. They plan to use the funds to design, engineer and install a zipline tour at the Xat’sull Heritage Village site.
CRD Submits Resolutions to NCLGA
The CRD Board of Directors will be submitting three resolutions to the 2017 North Central Local Government Association Conference held in May. At the Conference, the Association members vote and prioritize resolutions to carry forward to the Union of BC Municipalities Convention in September.
In the first resolution, the Board requests NCLGA and UBCM to urge the Minister of Finance to review the issue of grants-in-lieu paid by BC Hydro with respect to its transmission and distribution assets as promised during the preparation of Budget 2012.
The Board is putting forward a second resolution for the NCLGA and UBCM to lobby the Province to repeal the requirement for a Board of Variance from the Local Government Act.
Lastly, the CRD Directors are sending a resolution asking the Province to work with agricultural dam owners to assist them in meeting the requirements of the Dam Safety Regulation and to apportion fairly the cost of inspecting and maintaining agricultural dams.
Director Appointed to Alex Fraser Park Society
The Board of Directors endorsed a recommendation to appoint Director Dylan Cash to represent the Board on the Alex Fraser Park Society. The Board endorsed appointments to the other outside organizations to which the CRD belongs at the Jan. 13 board meeting. Highlights from past Board meetings are located at cariboord.ca.
Board Supports South Cariboo Timber Supply Review
The Board will be sending a letter to West Fraser 100 Mile House supporting their request that the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources conduct a new Timber Supply Review in the 100 Mile House Timber Supply Area in 2018.
North Cariboo Capital Projects Approved for 2017
The CRD Directors endorsed a recommendation from the North Cariboo Joint Planning Committee to make changes to the North Cariboo Recreation and Parks Service 2017 capital plan with no net increase to the budget. As a result, the Barlow Creek Hall’s basement project, the Bouchie Lake Recreation Commission’s equestrian concession project and the Quesnel and District Arts and Recreation Centre’s air handling unit project will be moved to the 2017 capital plan.
Free Wi-Fi Sought at Rural Rest Stops
In relation to the Province’s new free Wi-Fi initiative at rest areas throughout B.C., the Board will be sending a letter to the Minister of Transportation requesting that consideration be given to rest stops within the Cariboo Regional District.
